Hydrant Flushing Program
The Village of East Alton conducts routine hydrant flushing and flow testing twice annually—once in the spring and once in the fall—as part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe, reliable, and high-quality water distribution system.
Purpose of Hydrant Flushing
Hydrant flushing involves the controlled release of water from fire hydrants to:
-
Maintain and improve overall water quality
-
Ensure hydrants are operating properly and providing sufficient flow for firefighting needs
-
Remove naturally occurring iron and mineral deposits that accumulate in the water mains
This process is a critical part of water system maintenance and ensures that both residents and businesses have access to safe, clean water and that firefighters have access to adequate water flow during emergencies.
What to Expect During Flushing
During hydrant flushing in your area, you may experience:
-
Temporary discoloration of water (rusty or tea-colored appearance) due to the disturbance of iron and mineral sediments
-
Reduced water pressure or flow
Important Notes:
-
Discolored water is not harmful and remains safe for consumption and general use.
-
However, discolored water may stain laundry. To prevent this:
-
Wait until flushing in your area is complete.
-
Run cold water from a faucet (preferably a bathtub or outdoor spigot) until the water runs clear.
-
If laundry becomes stained, do not let the clothes dry. Keep them wet and treat with a stain remover.
-
Stain removal products are available free of charge at the Water Department Desk.
-
Need Assistance?
If you have questions about the hydrant flushing process or need clarification, please contact the East Alton Water Department at (618) 259-4646.
Thank you for your cooperation as we work to maintain the integrity and safety of the Village’s water system.
Quality on Tap – Village of East Alton Water Department
At the Village of East Alton Water Department, our mission has always been to provide a safe, dependable, and high-quality supply of drinking water to our residents.
Our Water Source
We draw our water from eight deep wells that access the American Bottoms Aquifer—a natural underground water source covering approximately 175 square miles, stretching from Alton to Dupo, Illinois. This aquifer provides a sustainable and reliable source of groundwater for our community.
Water Treatment Process
Our water treatment plant was originally constructed in 1968, and in 1992, a state-of-the-art 3-million-gallon-per-day (MGD) treatment addition was built to meet increasing demands and ensure advanced purification capabilities.
Here’s how our multi-step treatment process works:
-
Aeration:
Raw well water first passes through an aerator, which removes dissolved gases (such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide) and oxidizes iron, preparing it for further treatment. -
Clarification:
The aerated water then enters a clarifier, where lime and coagulants are added to remove iron, manganese, and reduce hardness. -
Recarbonation:
Next, the water flows into a recarbonation chamber, where carbon dioxide is added to lower the pH and stabilize the water for safe domestic use. -
Fluoridation:
At this stage, fluoride is added to promote dental health, in accordance with public health guidelines. -
Filtration:
The treated water passes through dual filtration units to remove any remaining traces of turbidity and fine particulates. -
Storage & Distribution:
Finally, the purified, softened water is stored in two clear wells with a combined capacity of 1 million gallons, and is then distributed throughout the Village’s water system to homes and businesses.
Commitment to Excellence
The Village of East Alton is a proud member of the Groundwater Guardian Foundation, reflecting our ongoing dedication to groundwater protection. In 2000, we received the Shining Star Award from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, recognizing our continued leadership in groundwater preservation efforts.
